Coco by Chanel is an Eau de Toilette designed for women, falling within the floral oriental category. This scent is a tribute to the opulent baroque style favored by Gabrielle Chanel, leading to its choice of name—Coco. This fragrance carries significant sentimental value and has a profound personal connection.
Introduced in 1979 by the renowned perfumer Jacques Polge, Coco marked his inaugural female fragrance for the Chanel brand. The year he embarked on this venture, Polge visited Gabrielle Chanel’s elaborately decorated apartment on the chic Rue Cambon. He was taken aback by the extravagant baroque style, which starkly contrasted with the simplistic elegance she typically illustrated in her fashion creations. In recognition of Gabrielle’s fondness for ornate design, Polge made it his mission to reflect this aesthetic in his first tribute, resulting in the birth of Coco.
At the top of this Eau de Toilette’s composition is a blend of spicy floral notes, combining coriander, mandarin, peach, jasmine, and the exquisite Bulgarian rose, a personal favorite of Polge. The heart showcases jasmine—the quintessential flower in Gabrielle’s fragrances—embodying femininity and uniqueness. The scent concludes with a warm base featuring patchouli and amber, noted for their richness.
The name Coco stems from Gabrielle’s early career as a performer in a Music Hall, under which she gained fame as a vocalist. This affectionate moniker stayed with her for a lifetime.
